Director of Center for Neural Tumor Research

Marco Giovannini, M.D., Ph.D., is a principal investigator and the director of the Center for Neural Tumor Research at the House Ear Institute. A molecular biologist by training, Dr. Giovannini is interested in investigating the genetic and biochemical basis of tumor growth to find target proteins and pathways for rational drug design that will improve tumor treatments. Dr. Giovannini and his research team are developing an integrated Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) platform for screening novel drug agents in pre-clinical studies to develop new therapies for the tumors that arise in individuals with NF2. The unique NF2 animal models Dr. Giovannini developed in his laboratory at the Institut National Recherche Sante Medicale (INSERM) in France are used as filters for trials in NF2 patients at the Institute to select agents that have the greatest likelihood of success. Dr. Giovannini collaborates closely with medical colleagues in the House Clinic and cell and molecular biologists in the Institute on every facet of tumor research from the study of in vitro models to histopathology and gene sequencing.

A native of Italy, Dr. Giovannini earned his Ph.D. in Molecular Pathology and his M.D. at the University of Bologna, Italy. Dr. Giovannini conducted research in Paris, France for many years, where he earned an H.D.R., the highest academic degree conferred by French universities. In 2000, Dr. Giovannini was awarded the Prix de la Ligue Nationale contre le Cancer for his achievements in cancer research. An author and co-author of numerous articles on various aspects of tumor research, Dr. Giovannini’s work has been published in such journals as Genes&Development, Nature Genetics, Cancer Research and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Giovannini divides his time between Los Angeles, California and Paris, France.
